I know a reasonable amount about both Western astrology, with the twelve sun signs of the Zodiac (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Saggitarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces), and Chinese astrology, which also has twelve signs but measures by year rather than by (approximately) month.

And one of the ways I classify and try to understand characters in media is by figuring out their astrological sign.

I am happy to discuss or argue any of these (some characters I know right away, but others it's taken me ages to decide what sign they are).

I was going to put in a bit about relationships, since I'm a water sign and that is therefore my forte (or at least something in which I'm deeply interested), but that would make this post really long, so suffice it to say people of the same element (fire or earth or water or air) tend to get along, and that water and earth go well together and fire and air go well together. Also, people of the same sign always have an interesting vibe, whether positive or negative (and two Leos nearly always get along wonderfully). But those are generalizations—specific cases may vary.

Slytherin's cardinal traits are ambition, cunning and determination. Like the Gryffindor House, Slytherins are emotionally volatile. In contrast, however, Slytherins are much less dominant and assertive, and less extraverted in general. Rather than expressing these emotions outwardly, Slytherins direct them inward or act in a passive aggressive manner. Both Gryffindor and Slytherin are much more driven to succeed than the other two houses: Gryffindor out of pride and Slytherin out of ambition.


Slytherins are also much more pragmatic than the other houses and more adept at manipulating people. A key trait would be a low level of agreeableness: Slytherins are more pessimistic, more distrustful than most, and more likely to attribute negative motivations to people. So although Slytherins experience a wide range of emotions, due to their distrustful views of people and skeptical worldview, they are less expressive and more likely to appear cold or distant unless provoked.

A Slytherin's ambitious nature comes out in different ways depending on what is important to the individual person. It could lead them to try to achieve top marks (if intellect and schooling is important to them) but it could also be directed at social settings or towards athletic endeavors.

10 – Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?

Yes and yes. It's a threesome rather than a pairing, but I love Richard/Kahlan/Cara and have trouble actually writing it, possibly because it's not that far from canon, and canon pairings are actually more difficult for me to write (particularly Hero/Heroine). Similarly, I like Clark/Lois, with the same problem.

I often try writing pairings I don't like, or just can't really imagine working out, for a challenge or a prompt response, and that can be a lot of fun - I like seeing if I can make it believable. I don't like Harry/Ginny, but have managed to write them (although it was a struggle), and I wasn't expecting to find Zedd/Cara as believable as it is.

Also, despite shipping various threesomes involving them and loving both characters, I don't really ship Cara/Kahlan, but I have written it.

I like to think I'm willing to try to write any pairing, but it's definitely easier if it's one I find inspiring/hot/interesting.

Only three pairings? This was a struggle - I had to exclude threesomes ;)

Legend of the Seeker: Darken/Kahlan, Darken/Nicci, Richard/Nicci
Harry Potter: Lucius/Narcissa, Severus/Lily, Draco/Astoria
Smallville: Lionel/Lillian, Lex/Lana, and Lionel/Martha (which I haven't written, but want to)

Honestly, though, just as with my favorite characters to write, I tend to think about the fandom more in terms of the whole family, not just one character or pairing (the Rahls, the Malfoys, the Luthors). A fic centered around a particular pairing will, for me, usually draw in other family relationships as well.

3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?

Smallville - Lex Luthor, Lionel Luthor, occasionally Lana Lang
Harry Potter - Lily Potter Sr, Luna Lovegood, Narcissa Malfoy, Draco Malfoy, Lucius Malfoy, Hermione Granger, Severus Snape, and (my versions of) the Next Gen children.
Legend of the Seeker - Kahlan Amnell, Darken Rahl, Nicci

If I write in a fandom long enough, I end up writing all the characters, even if it's just a drabble or a minor part in a longer fic. Admittedly I probably wouldn't be able to do that in HP, since some people are just names, but I try ;)

In LotS, for example, I've written Leo, one of my least favorite characters! But, inasmuch as I've ever been talked to by a fictional character, I argue the most with Kahlan, which often leads to an interesting time when I'm writing ;D
