Nicholas and Nila are more alike than they might think, each thinking they are superior to the other and striving for parental notice and affection. OMG, this is such a good point! You always make me see things in a different and more complicated way. Nila and Nicholas do have a lot in common - although there are some important differences, too.
I'm not sure if the guards didn't notice him on purpose or if there's something else going on here. Nicholas isn't sure, either...hopefully that will make more sense eventually.
Interesting that he's so intelligent as to see through Jennsen's attempt to turn him against his father with her story about Hero Richard. Nicholas knows a bit about telling stories to sway your audience already...
Jennsen is looking to the future, trying to win Nicholas to her side. She doesn't know there's any hope of Richard's return, and you're right - she's trapped. (I kind of feel sorry for her, actually.)
