'My Lord, the self-styled ‘Emperor Jagang,’ is attempting to storm the castle. Shall I tell the cooks to prepare the boiling oil?”' This seemed quite funny, a bored butler comment to his Lord about a tiresome but not dangerous nuisance.
It's less amusing when we see what power the invaders seem to have. Excited to see what happens to Kahlan next. Though I really think she was out of line blaming Rahl for the battering down of the gates - he'd consider it an inconvenience, an insult, even if his children weren't inside the Palace; that is, it's not something he'd willingly allow. Had he realised the danger, I'm guessing he'd have had the children and Kahlan transported to safety by magic or smuggled out of a concealed tunnel by the Mord'Sith perhaps .
