He seems to be a spoiled little princeling, but not the monster that Kahlan dreads. That depends - Nicholas is a whole person, not only a product of Kahlan's worst fears. But real monsters are people, too, or at least they can be. And Nicholas certainly doesn't feel guilty for killing Mistress Alina - the incident is not even on his radar at the moment.
What will he do when he finds out his mother is going to have another child? An excellent question - we'll see ;D
I wonder if he perceives that Kahlan feels much differently about him than she does Nila? I'd say he does, but not in any kind of verbal way - his and Nila's places in the family hierarchy are very different, after all, and he doesn't know how much of his mother's tension comes from what he's just learned about her and his father - however, he is aware there's something, if not what it is.
Although what would the guards do if Nicholas wanted to release her - considering that they did nothing to stop him from entering? They probably wouldn't be able to stop him, I think. However he did it, Nicholas wafted through their defenses easily enough. Jennsen may hope he'll release her, but he has his own opinions about another uncontrollable relative running around - and she probably did scare him a little, talking about being crazy.
I enjoyed the Captain Meiffert reference. It will be interesting to see where you take his character. Hmmm...all I can say is he will appear again. My list of OCs is growing, here...ah, well ;)
